Al Lerman Live at The Acoustic Grill

A modern, bare-boned disc that is as downhome and true to myself as I can possibly get. No over-dubs or guest musicians, just me, my guitar and rack harmonica.

On hearing the final mixes, it put in mind of those impressionable years when I was first exposed to the Riverboat Coffeehouse in Toronto’s thriving Yorkville Village back in 1965. I was only eleven, but since they didn’t serve alcohol, a kid like me  could get in. In the coffeehouse, intimate and attentive crowds would sip mochas and expressos while listening to solo acoustic performances such as Joni Mitchell and Dave Van Ronk. Blues artists like Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Bukka White and John Hammond all appeared regularly. It was the blues artists that really moved me and inspired me to become a fulltime musician, which i’ve managed to do for over fourty years.

Al Lerman.

Multi-instrumentalist AL LERMAN (harmonica, tenor saxophone, guitar and vocals) is the band leader of the 2x Juno Award winning blues/roots outfit FATHEAD. He also performs regularly as a solo acoustic artist playing guitar & rack harmonica, and often works as a guest sideman with a myriad of top-notch bands, touring internationally.

Recorded Live at The Acoustic Grill

Al Lerman Liner Notes:

I was elated when Steve Purtell, owner of The Acoustic Grill in Picton, Ontario approached me with the idea of recording a live CD in his establishment. The trouble was, I had just released "Crowe River Blues" which included most of the material being featured in my current performances. Not wanting to let a good opportunity slip away, I quickly penned a few new tunes, revisited some songsI had previously written for Fathead and brushed up on some old blues faves.

The result is "Live at The Acoustic Grill", a modern, bare-boned disc that is as downhome and true to myself as I can possibly get. No over-dubs or guest musicians, just me, my guitar and rack harmonica. On hearing the final mixes, it put in mind of those impresionable years when I was first exposed to the Riverboat Coffeehouse in Toronto's thriving Yorkville Village back in 1965. I was only eleven, but since they didn't serve alcohol, a kid like me  could get in. In the coffeehouse, intimate and attentive crowds would sip mochas and expressos while listening to solo acoustic performances such as Joni Mitchell and Dave Van Ronk. Blues artists like Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Bukka White and John Hammond all appeared regulary. It was the blues artists that really moved me and inspired me to become a fulltime musician, which i've managed to do for over fourty years.

While I was interested in music from an even younger age, it was those early yeary concerts that really ignited my fuse and propelled me down my chosen path. This Live at The Acoustic Grill recording manages to recapture that same coffeehouse spirit. Coincidently, I feature a few songs here that I first heard all those yeards ago. It seems the older I get, the more life seems to come around full circle, I am right back where I started, but with a much different perspective. It is a good place to be.
